Stella's story

I am currently volunteering with 4-H Mentoring in Provo. I was matched with my mentee in July 2012. We are pretty much the same person, except she’s 13 and Chinese. Seriously, when I came home after meeting her for the first time, my husband asked me what she is like. I said, “She plays the flute and loves to read. She loves school and is really smart. Her favorite color is green. Oh, and Taylor Swift is her favorite singer.” Then my husband asked, “Wait, are you talking about your mentee or yourself?”

She is really sweet, and we have had a lot of fun together over the last few months! We have drawn pictures with sidewalk chalk on her driveway, explored a mini “wetland” at a local park and learned how to work together to accomplish a seemingly impossible task.

Because I haven’t been mentoring that long, I don’t know if I can give any advice or have a cool anecdote to share. I can say that hanging out with my mentee has really made a positive difference in my life over the last few months. Even though I just got married and am loving spending time with my husband, I had felt that something was missing in my life. I realized that I’ve spent a lot of time since the beginning of the year thinking about myself, my wedding, my relationship, etc. Of course these are all good things! But I needed to spend some time focusing on something outside of all of that. Mentoring has been a great way to do good and remember that the world doesn’t revolve around what color napkins I had at my wedding reception. Plus, it’s fun!
